Addictions Through an ACT Lens: Using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Approach in Addiction Treatment (4/04/19)

Sweetser, 329 Bath Rd., - Brunswick
9:00 am-4:00 pm

Humans get stuck.   We get stuck in feelings, thoughts, stories and repetitive behavioral patterns, called psychological and behavioral rigidity.   Persistent psychological and behavioral rigidity can be seen as the core of most mental health issues including substance abuse and addiction.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) views clients as stuck rather than sick and psychological rigidity and experiential avoidance as a part of the human condition.  It combines the wisdom and effectiveness of motivational interviewing, mindfulness practices and behavioral activation to support the psychological and behavioral flexibility needed for recovery from addictions. By integrating ACT into addiction treatment practice, therapists can help clients to:

  • Unhook from negative/harmful thoughts

  • Be more present and aware in the moment

  • Accept feelings and sensations as they arise

  • Focus on what’s most important in their lives

  • Take committed action toward their values

  • Have a kinder and more realistic view of themselves

Using a combination of didactic presentation and experiential exercises, this workshop will introduce the ACT model, philosophy, and core concepts (psychological rigidity and flexibility) and how they can be used in addiction treatment.
